Etudes for Juggling: The Next Three Years of Your Life
TESTIMONIALS

Hi Jason,

Pretty much nothing but superlatives to report! The format is logical and simple. The graphics and music are top-notch. I like your glossing over the site-swap terms. It would seem that entirely too much is made of it... kind of pedantic, actually. But, you distill the valuable part of it out painlessly and it makes quick and easy sense. Your appearance, voice-over descriptions and juggling demos are flawless. I very much like the way you introduce a pattern at the simple 3-ball level and then work your way up. That seems like a very promising road-map...It was very interesting to hear you clarify your "10X perfect" rule. In summary, from my beginners perspective, the Etudes disc set is beautifully done and should command a great deal of postivie response from the juggling community. It's obvious you put in a huge amount of work to design the content and then to put it all together. You should be congratulated for a very excellent job, indeed!

As a closing observation, when Donna and I took lessons from you a couple of years ago, I wasn't sure what to expect. A lot of superior jugglers (by that I mean better than me who can possibly teach me something) seem to regard the asking of a question as an opportunity to show-boat their stuff rather than give thoughtful and helpful advice. You are clearly not like that. You wear two hats: Juggler and Teacher! We were very impressed that you spent 100% of the time with us analyzing and advising without any showing off at all except for pertinent demonstration (even though you had many chances to do this). It's a well known fact that you're a World-Class Juggler. I think this video also reinforces your prior videos and book and gets the notion across that you're also to be acknowledged as a World-Class Teacher. I'm quite sure these two traits don't always go hand-in-hand.

So, maybe Donna & I can take some more lessons from you down the road...

Best regards, Ed Kreusser

Jason,

I am making my way through the Etudes DVD and must say it is a gorgeous, classy DVD! The artwork and analogy to music are terrific. I came to the festival searching for teacher training as I am working at Circus Center. The DVD exceeded my expectations and illustrated why I am doing what I do. It is for the perfection of the form, which your DVD shows. It doesn't matter why the student would be studying juggling. The technique is what should be emphasized. I agree with you completely when you say that juggling is about the throws and not about the catches. In juggling, form follows function. By insisting on the perfection of the technique of throwing, a teacher encourages what we used to call "errorless learning". In the long run, it is the only way that makes any sense. The course of training will lead a student tthe ability to do anything with toss juggling. I only wish the teachers at the Moscow Circus School could see it because I know they would love it. I also only wish I had had such a tape when I was just beginning juggling. Your technique is flawless, what an accomplishment!

Of course I've heard all about your "bad" image. However, three things struck me about the DVD:
1) The DVD has a very generous feel to it. I know you are charging money for it and of course hope to make money on it, however it is just too well done to be seen merely in that light. The split screen clarity of demystifying site swaps, the precise examples of every move, the artwork of music and props on the musical staffs are too well done.
2) Illustrating the value of solid technique on a high level also displays the "virtue" in virtuosity. One can't go through that process and not have it affect one's mind and spirit. It is much like zen meditation on that level.
3) I believe the DVD stands as a kind of ode or homage to toss juggling. I think historically, this is how it will be viewed.

Not bad for a "bad" guy!

Sincerely,

Judy Finelli

Mr. Garfield,

Etudes For Juggling is without any doubt the best instructional video I have ever watched. It includes explainations for a plenty of tricks. Beginning with Siteswaps, over Body Throws to 360s. Every single trick on this DVD is explained perfectly and it's easy to understand. Jason tells you everything you need to know about good form and technique. The short "Don't do this" - clips are very helpful as well. Etudes For Juggling provides you the knowledge to have fast progress and to be the best juggler you can be. Great work!

I hope I can make it to one if the next WJF competitions!
